Wisdom Teeth Extraction

Wisdom teeth, also called third molars, were necessary for our ancestors to chew and grind foods for easier digestion. Modern humans, however, have far more easily accessible dietary choices and cooking methods resulting in smaller jaw structures and third molars becoming obsolete for most people.

Does Everyone Need to Have Their Wisdom Teeth Extracted?

Not necessarily; however, two-thirds of the population will experience problems with wisdom teeth at some stage of their lives. Third molars typically erupt between your late teens and early twenties. In a majority of cases, wisdom teeth need to be extracted due to disrupting the alignment of the rest of your teeth.

If left, they can lead to dental or health complications. For example, they are more prone to decay and gum disease in the surrounding tissue simply because they are so difficult to keep clean due to their location at the posterior of the jaw.

What Are Impacted
Wisdom Teeth?

Impacted wisdom teeth can become painful even though they only partially emerge from the jaw or fail to erupt at all. Impaction means there is not enough space for the wisdom teeth to erupt. This may be because of limited jaw space or because of neighbouring teeth and roots.

Impacted teeth result in the painful movement of the tooth beneath the gums, which can lead to swelling, gum tissue pain, headaches and jaw pain.

In most instances, your Sydney CBD or Lane Cove dentists will recommend extracting these types of problematic wisdom teeth.

Does Pulling Wisdom Teeth Hurt?

At A Better Smile Dental Centre, your gentle dentists prioritise your comfort and will ensure you are completely numb for your procedure. You may feel some pressure but should not feel any pain.

You will need to manage discomfort during the healing process. As with any surgery, some bruising, swelling and minor discomfort are typical. Over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications or other medications recommended by your medical doctor or dentist should be taken as directed to manage discomfort.

You should also avoid smoking, drinking through a straw and extremely crunchy or hot foods for a week or two to ensure healing. Dislodging the healing tissue by smoking or eating the wrong foods can result in increased discomfort and longer healing times.
