Dental Sedation

At A Better Smile Dental Centre, we provide a solution for patients that might experience distress and dental anxiety. Sometimes patients have had a negative experience in the past that prevents them from seeking the preventive and restorative dentistry necessary to protect their oral health and smiles. Unfortunately, this can result in painful dental emergencies and emergency dental care.

At our Lane Cove and Sydney CBD dental clinics, we sought a solution to help patients be proactive in their dental care.

Dental Sedation Sydney We have provided patients suffering from dental anxiety with painless and peaceful dental procedures through mild nitrous oxide (happy gas) and intravenous sedation (IV sedation) for more profound relaxation.

Happy Gas for Mild Dental Sedation

Happy Gas for Mild Dental Sedation

This is the lightest type of sedation. There are several ways to sedate a patient that result in anxiolysis. At A Better Smile Dental Centre, we use nitrous oxide inhalation, also known as laughing gas.

Nitrous oxide is a wonderful way to reduce a patient’s anxiety because it is administered under the supervision of the dentist and can be quickly reversed when it is time for you to leave. Nitrous oxide induces a relaxed feeling and sends you into a dreamlike state.

What Is IV Sedation Dentistry?

As its name suggests, IV sedation is a type of anaesthesia administered through an injection into a patient’s vein. These sedatives allow the patient to respond to verbal requests and answer questions. To ensure the safety of the procedure, our team carefully monitors each patient.

Before you have IV sedation dentistry, we will examine your medical history form and list of medications because your safety is our number one priority.
  • Who Can Benefit from Sedation Dentistry?

Patients who have dental anxiety, dental phobia, or fear of the dentist are great candidates for sedation dentistry. Additionally, if you have a strong gag reflex, have difficulty sitting still, or you have lengthy cosmetic or restorative procedures planned, sedation can make your dental appointment easy and stress- free.

  • Is IV Sedation Same as General Anaesthesia?

No. The ADA (Australia Dental Association) classifies IV sedation as conscious sedation. The drugs involved in the procedure will help patients to relax and block pain. However, patients are not fully unconscious.

Sleep sedation dentistry enables even the most anxious people to undergo dental treatment. During treatment, you will not experience any pain or discomfort, and when you awake after the procedure, you will have little to no memory of the treatment. To ensure your safety, you should arrange for a companion to take you home and rest for the remainder of the day.
