What are fissures Sealants?
Our teeth naturally contained grooves and fissures at the top surface of the back teeth known as molars. Those fissures trap tiny pieces of food that encourage the growth of bacteria, increasing the risk of developing caries.Research by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) found that sealing the grooves with fissure sealants on children and adolescents will efficiently prevent caries. The evidence showed that is more effective than the use of fluoride or toothpaste and simple brushing. The most important part of sealing the grooves is that the tooth that received a sealant will be protected from any caries and the progression of deeper grooves.
