Why is our appearance so important?

Our appearance is more than just a façade - it communicates clear messages to others. The way we look can be a reflection of how we feel about ourselves. A well-kept appearance can indicate cleanliness, organization, high self-esteem, and personal pride. The fashion of our clothing can indicate our social status as well as enhance our appearance. Fair or not, we all, to some extent, judge each other on how we look.

We have always admired, if not envied, those with striking beauty. The world seems to open its arms to those so endowed. Attractive people typically receive more positive attention, preferential treatment, better marks in school, better career opportunities with higher pay, and even receive fewer court convictions. Professionally and personally, it can get you into almost any door. It may not seem fair, but we've always known that beauty has its advantages.

More than 92% agree that an attractive smile is an important social asset;

Nearly as many, close to 88%, say they always remember someone with an especially attractive smile;

85% agree that an unattractive smile makes a person less appealing to people of the opposite sex;

74% agree that an unattractive smile can hurt a person's chances for career success; yet

Less than 24% are satisfied with their smile.
